Rome: a long weekend in the Eternal City

Rome. The Eternal City. I was utterly bowled over by the architecture, the weather, the handsome Italian men and, of course, the food.

Being the first time either Mic or I had visited Rome, it was a perfect weekend combination of sight-seeing and kicking back with Aperols and yummy Italian food. I am not ashamed to admit I ate three-cheese pizza (and everything else I could fit in my face) every day whilst basking in the glorious Italian sunshine.

Tips for Rome:
  • Book a 'hop on, hop off' bus ticket. For the day it costs €19, and allows you to take a guided bus tour around Rome. You can hop on and off at any of the 12 stops and the buses come every 15 minutes.
  • The Trevi Fountain is one of the most beautiful, romantic sights I have ever seen (if you can block out the hundreds of tourists who, like you, are trying to get that perfect photo)! Don't forget to throw your penny with your right hand over your left shoulder to ensure your return to Rome!
  • The gelato is out of this world.
  • The iced coffee is unlike anything I've ever tasted. I want to bathe in it, like the gluttonous caffeine fiend I am.
  • Colosseum tickets are €12 (without the tour). Skip the lengthy queues and book yours in advance.
  • I really recommend the seafood risotto from Yume.
  • Visit the churches. They are breathtaking. Don't forget to dress appropriately - no bare shoulders or anything above the knee.
  • WEAR. COMFORTABLE. SHOES. Shit shoes + cobbled streets + 15000+ steps per day (thanks, pedometer) = sore legs. Be ye not as stupid as me.
